Twisted Roots

I had really wanted to create a collection that would showcase my braiding skills. I remember I wanted simplicity for styling with a strong visual neck piece. I also wanted to work with models that possessed the texture of hair ideal for the collection I wanted to bring to life

d84d675ba174dfb6cfc132c2fb85e4b7.jpg

This collection was 1 of 5 shoots executed in the winter of 2016 for NAHA 2017. Although it was not nominated, I submitted the collection for publication and was honored to have it grace the pages of American Salon Magazine.

In the past few years I worked with photographer, Clay Cook (whom I was nominated for a mens award in 2014). I had booked make up artist, Isidro Valencia and designer\stylist Genna Yussman Greene. Everyone was on board and loved the concept.

For booking the models, I had couple in mind that I had recently worked with on other shoots. I was so happy when they all agreed and were available on the day I had set up with the team.

Practice was imperative and I chose mannequins that had hair similar to the models I had booked. I spent a few weeks practicing different looks on them. I would at some point finish the look somewhat satisfied and  wood return the following day to see if I was still feeling the hairstyle. If I didn't speak to me, I would redo the stylet. If it did then I sought to enhance the overall look.

FullSizeRender-27.jpg
FullSizeRender-26.jpg

I practiced the styles for several hours over a couple of weeks on Pivot Point Mannequins. I would send text images of my mannequins to Clay and Isidro so they would have an idea of where I was taking the hair.

The Day of the shoot was on a Sunday at Clay's studio. I made sure to have lots of food and drink on set for the models. The shoot lasted for a total of 7 hours with at least 2 hours prep for each model.  Wardrobe was easy as all models would be adorned with the large necklace. I remember being exhausted with tired hands after the shoot but I was happy because I knew we had made something amazing.

set up for success

I tend to always overpack for photoshoots so I had plenty of hair extensions, irons and products at hand. The fun part is always creating the mess but not so much the clean up.

I invited Derek Hibben on set to take bts images and he did an fantastic job. The looks were inspired by Asian and African hairstyles and from my own imagination.

Having a team is so crucial, I love working with Isidro he is able to balance the hair with the appropriate make up. Genna always have amazing ideas and always has really unique fashions and accessories. Working with Clay is always a pleasure, he has a great eye for balance and brings his creative touch to every project.

On model Centria I flat-straighten her long hair using Redken's Iron Shape 11.  I deftly cornrowed her hair with Braid Aid 03 on scalp then transition the braids off scalp. I secured a high bun on top with elastic cord and adorned it with some of the smaller braids securing each layer with Fashion Works 12. I finished the look with Control Addict 28 and lots of Shine Flash 02.

On model, Tyrah I diffused her natural texture and used clips and the heat of the hair dry to create and sustain the separation (space) in her rounded hairstyle. I then applied Hardward Gel 16 styling gel to create the braided veil. I did tiny brides around her hairline then forged them together at certain points with black rubber bands. I finished the look with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 02.

For model, Myah I did a directional blow dry the cornrowed her hair with Braid Aid 02. I added several wefted hair extensions that were micro crimped using the Sam Villa Texur Iron and formed into a disheveled, textured bun. I used Fashion Works 12 to separate the style and finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 02.

For make up I gave Isidro free range. I had sent him only a couple inspirational images. I only request a strong lip of which we choose a bright tangerine for contrast. He created a beautiful arched brow and soft smoky eye. Post shoot Clay asked if I would be open to Black and White and I agreed as it would give a strong effect.

Redken NBT V: The NYX FACE Awards

Working on Kimberley's wig for the big show

Kimberley was actually staying at the same hotel as me. So I simply went to her room with my kit in tow.  She answered the door with excitement as I introduced myself. She showed me her outfit and the wig she wanted to wear for the awards. She was really open to any of my ideas. I spent the next three hours doing various braids and fishtails to create texture. I did a soft spiral curl throughout the lower half of the hair piece. I loved how her look came together and really showed her personality. I styled it own her head and place silver bobbi pins in various patterns and stragetigically placed the braids.

I was so excited for Kimberley and hearing her story of how she started her make up career and her process of becoming a finalist for the NYX face awards. half way through styling, Kimberley's mother had arrived from Canada. It was good to meet her mom. I finished her hair, took photos and send bye. See you at the awards.

This day started off right with an hour tour of celebrity hair colorist, Tracey Cunningham's salon. We arrived early in Beverly Hills the home her salon, Meche. Her salon and staff were very down to earth with a cool L.A. casual vibe. I was on my best behavior but wanted to fan girl out when I noticed Mandy Moore having a blow out.

I was asked to be lead hairstylist for designer Stevie Boi by High Definition Professional's Heather King.  Prior to leaving for NYC Heather sent me the looks requested by Stevie Boi. The hairstyles were slicked back wet hair, cornrows and standing high ponytails. I created two quick tutorials of which I shared with the team prior to arriving in New York.

The models

The hotel was filled with models, hair and make up artists. We had a total of 50 models to complete with a team of 13 hair & make up artists. I split our team into groups based on skill and comfort level. This way everyone was responsible for the same looks for continuity.  As models came in I assessed what looks would work best on them based on their current hair and directed them to hair stylists that  were strongest in certain areas.

The hair looks were created using Redken hairstyling. The high ponytails required a directional blow-dry upwards using Guts 10 spray foam. Hair was then put into a pontail. Next the model leaned forward and Two hairstylists had to work together and wrap the base of the ponytail using elastic cording. The elastic had to be taught in order for the ponytails to stand on their own.

Backstage NYFW: Nina Tiari SS 18

It was a dream to spend a third season working NYFW. This time I was invited to do hair backstage with Hi Definition Professional led by Heather King & Derek Moser for Nina Tiari's Spring\Summer 2018 collection. We had 20 models to prepare with a team of 10 hairstylists and 10 make up artists from both the U.S. and Canada sponsored by Redken and NYX Cosmetics.

I arrived a day prior to get settled before the show for a 9 a.m. call time the following morning at the Dream Hotel downtown. The security gave us our lanyards after identifying the backstage team. I arrived to a beautifully lit backroom with mirrors and tables to set up.  After a quick group meeting, models had begun arriving and were assigned to hair and make up artists to ready for the show.

The look for hair was a messy, curled hair with intended frizz. I used a 3\4 inch marcel iron and wrapped 1" to 2" sections using Redken's Iron Shape 11 to sustain the curl. Afterwards Curls were separated and teased using my hands with a tad of Powder Grip 03 and finished using Control Addict 28. We had a total of 3 hours for hair and make up combined with a run through.

The ride is not over this was just the beginning. Thank goodness my memories is good and that I took lots of photos. Get ready for my next entry.....

Redken NBT part I

Well I decided to start a blog so here is my first post. The last four weeks have been crazy busy and I had been meaning to some how showcase my experience. Better late than never I say.

I was named one of The Next Best Thing (NBT) by Redken based on several hair color & styling challenges I had to post on Instagram for several weeks. The prize for winning would be an all expense trip to L.A. for a week of educational and inspirational experiences for six winners.

Redken NBT 2017

I figured I had nothing to lose. I was so happy when photographer and designer Genna Yussman Greene agreed to shoot and style all the shoots. I booked three make up artist and a total of six models for each challenge.

When Redken announced the winners. I was overjoyed as was Genna. Whether I won or not, I really just wanted to do the photoshoots and I love a good challenge. Winning the contest meant a lot to me and I was fortunate that all my clients willingly rescheduled their appointments.

Flying to L.A. was so exciting as I had no idea what the week would entail other than the itinerary that Redken had emailed to me. Other than two of the winners I had never met the other winners. After spending a week with a group of people you really get to know them. I had a wonderful time meeting and spending time with Redken artists Kyle Pinneo, Nikki Diederich, Aundreya Shae Rich, Woodward Bartlet and Cheryl Bakke

Redken hosted us at the Standard Hotel in downtown L.A. I went to the rooftop upon arrival and greeted the other artists that had arrived.  After a cocktail and meet and greet I retired to my room. The next day was a free day and a group of us went to Venice Beach to enjoy some sunshine. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel to get ready to meet Rodney Cutler at the Kimpton hotel rooftop party.

Rodney gave amazing advice but didn't try to take over. My model Maria, was very sweet. I did a layered dry cut on her hair and created a wet like hairstyle with braids and elastics.
