I was excited when photographer and designer, Genna Yussman Greene asked me if I would be interested in shooting a swimsuit collection for summer 2018. I was beyond ready and wanted to do some sleek ponytails and big, voluminous hair. We need three models that were in top shape and we had worked with the three booked models in the past.

Genna had purchased some african influenced swim wear and we wanted to incorporate that into this collection for a worldly feel. The looks are fashionable yet still wearable. I chose to keep the hair simple, commercial and glamorous. Custom hair pieces were used on all three models with a couple braids and large barrel curling irons to set the hair.

Make up artist, Caleb Yeske created a nice neutral palette for each model with soft smokey eyes, red and violet lip hues and ample bronzer for a "beach" side look.

My keep Redken styling products on set were Guts 10 Volume spray foam and my Sam Villa hair dryer and round brush. I wanted to create a little volume pryer to setting the hair with curling irons. I used a couple large marcels irons with Iron Shape 11, allowed the hair to cool. Afterwards each section was backcombed at the root area and lightly brushed out. Fashion Works 12 working spray was a must. I did a flat wave on Emily using the Sam Villa straightening iron. Custom made ponytails that matched each models haircolor were added for length and density.

The day went amazingly well just under eight hours. Two looks allotted per model for hair and make up with Caleb and I. Lots of snacks and scheduling are key to success.

California Dreaming

I was really excited to shoot a summer collection with my friend Genna Yussman Greene. We had recently rented a studio at Mellwoods Art Center and she wanted to start shooting editorial and beauty in addition to design and styling.

I remember discussing doing a summer inspired shoot and we need models so I post on social media a model call. I had gotten several responses and decided to book four of the models that responded.

I knew for this collection I wanted to focus on texture with a commercial feel and utizling hair pieces to create some soft summery dimension. I made several clip hair extensions that I colored with Redken's City Beats fashion hair color.

We wanted a "Boho" feel so Genna styled multiple outfits using hassle, faux fur, heavy textiles and layers to create a fashionable, summer collection. For hair I set each models hair in varying degrees of curls sets (from tight curls to loose waves) incorporating soft summer pastel hues. Hair was teased and set into two to three looks per model. For some styles braids were added along with yarn for others.

I enlisted make up artist, Caleb Yeske to create the make up on our gorgeous models. He did a wonderful job of layering the make up from look to look. Soft natural looks to bright bold eyeshadeows and perfectly lined eyes.

The shoot lasted about 10 hours rotating models between sets and wardrobe and allowing ample time for hair and make up. The day was bright and cheery given the rather cold day outside. Our collection definitely harkens to summer and we were happy to have the collection featured in the June, Summer issue of Beauty Launchpad Magazine.

Hazy, breezy and oh so boho...this collection boasts textured hairstyles with colored accents, volume and commercial make up along with a modern Summer wardrobe.

We titled this collection, "California Dreaming" for the L.A. vibe with the hair and wardrobe. A big thank you to Beauty Launchpad for publishing our collection.

Premiere Orlando: Backstage REDKEN

Premiere Orlando held annually at the Orange County Convention Center in steamy but fashionable Orlando, Florida. This three day educational event hosts beauty professionals from all over the world with educators, seminars, anything your beauty heart\dollars can desire and your favorite Instagram stars.

The event itself is a fashion show: beautiful people inspirational hair and make up and complete sensory overload. I love seeing so many of my friends especially friends/artists from my hometown of Louisville, KY.

Redken always being at the forefront of education brought entertainment, education, hands on experiences and new product launches. Exciting new products included the revamped Color Gels Lacquer and new Shades EQ glosses NA (Natural Ash) series. Programs were held every hour for hands on experiences at the Redken booth with live demos and products lectures running parallel facilitated by several Redken Artists.

It has been years since I've been to Premiere so I was very excited when I was asked earlier this year to be part of the Beyond Brunette team backstage Redken. Again the team continud with Lindsey Olson and Tara Gardiner along with fellow Redken artist, Hugo Urias and Leah Hanson for "Beyond Brunette" and model presentation at the JCP In Style stage. This has been amazing experience on 2018 Redken show tour with this crew.

I arrived in humid Orlando Saturday prior to hair prep for a pre show meeting with the team. It was at the meeting head by Suzanne Sturm that I found out I would also be doing the wigs for the models for the color stage. In addition I would also being doing two rotations of demos/education on the subway at the Redken booth, Saturday Bangstyle IG takeover and lastly, a FB live on the Redken's upcoming texture line for Premiere Orlando's FB page. I was beyond stoked.

The following day arrived to an exiting whirlwind. I did my first rotation in the subway. Followed by my FB live of Premiere Orlando. I create two looks: infinity braid ponytail and a disheveled asymetrical undo using the upcoming "Dry" texture line. It was so much fun and so inspirational.

The next day arrived early and I along with several of the Redken artists entered the Orange County Convention Center to the backrooms for the model prep. After breakfast I joined my team and for the next several hours we cut, color and styled our mannequins heads.

Bang style asked me to do a IG stories takeover and I was more than happy to capture Redken artists working in the natural backstage environment, new products and techniques. Below is the IG story.

In addition I did braid wraps on the models to ready them for the next two show days. After wigs were assigned, Hugo and I styled and cut all the wigs to shape for each model.

The entire experience was amazing and Redken was at the forefront with free hand ons education at the Redken booth. Being a Redken artist is a rewarding experience and I love inspiring other artists.

The Redken Exchange: PHOTO FINISH 4/18

I was beyond excited to receive a contract for my first program, "Photo Finish" at the Redken Exchange in New York City. New relocated to the second floor of 404 5th Avenue, the Exchange has been education salon professionals for over 20 years. In addition to be excited I was a bit nervous as facilitating at the Exchange was a new challenge for me.

Fortunately I was co facilitating with editorial hairstylist, Noah Hatton. The class is a three day program that goes through theory including history of some famed editorial photographers who set the initial standards in the industry. Hands on experience with both mannequins and live models from a top NYC agency. Learning fundamental hair setting techniques including marcel iron work, French and Italian twists and ponytails and correct hairstyling products to use.

In addition the program allowed hairstylists to hone their finishing techniques, create a broader understanding of personal branding, team building with an editorial team and learning to cope with challenges that arise on set.

Hairstylists were given real time coaching and exercises as looks were first demoed by both Noah and I then they would be responsible to create from the demos. Hairstylists were given homework to find images to create vision boards to tell a story. Inspiration could come from magazine or google/pinterest images including hairstyles, makeup and fashion.

Each hairstylist was assign a professional model on Day 2 to practice the technique and to build rapport with the model. This would give the hairstylist ample time to get to know their personalities as well as analyze their facial shapes to start visualizing what they wanted to create on Day 3.

Day 3 brought a lot of excitement as each hairstylist was free to create two solid looks on their models reflecting their style. I worked with each hairstylist and model one on one selecting wardrobe close to their vision boards. Photographer Joseph Rivera photographed each model with make up by Xinxin Wang.

Noah and I accompanied each hairstylist on set to assist them with their models in front of the camera. It was an exciting day and a victory to see everyone fully invested and working so hard to create their works of art.

America's Beauty Show: Backstage REDKEN

America's Beauty Show or ABS for short is a beauty expo that takes over the McCormick convention center with three days of madness by the beauty industry. Manufacturers of hair products, goods, tools and equipment show up to compete for a hairdresser's attention and hard earned bucks but common were hairstylists so we love to spend it on hair stuff.

Complete With models, mannequins, hair stars of the industry and nightly events, ABS will keep you on your toes and running on andrenaline and excitement. You will leave feeling inspired, energized and ready to kick some hair butt but if you work the show you are ready to crash.

I can't say enough good things about working backstage my first ABS show. I had the pleasure of being lead again for Lindsey Olson and this time accompanied by Redken artist, Michelle Monday. This was Michelle's first show so it was even more special.

I arrived early for prep which was in make shift model rooms in the back of McCormick's convention center. You would be surprised at how amazing everyone that works the convention center can clean up the space like no other. It's like a post-apocalypytic hair show before he first attendees arrive. The model room is spaceous compared to our last venue each area a different program with different Redken Artist.

Being apart of the Redken tribe is like being part of a family only everyone does hair. So every so often I get to see some familiar faces and new ones.

This ABS would be a first of many new experiences created by Redken. We did "hands on" experiences at the Redken show booth ranging from haircutting, to styling to hair color placement. Programs ran 45 minutes and were a first come first serve basis complete with tools for the attendee to experience an NYC Redken Exchange experience. Each hour Redken styled models and dancers swarmed the Redken booth around a faux NYC subway complete with street dancing and drum players. The energy was alive and overwhelming.

I saw so many of my artist friends that work for other companies. The show room was so loud it was hard to hear yet alone keep your attention span. (I'm pretty sure a lot of us artist/hairdressers folks have some for of AAD.) haha, but it was high energy and exciting.

KMAC Couture 2018 | Backstage with designer Tiffany Nelson

I was in the midst of traveling when Louisville, Ky based designer, Tiffany Nelson (Holic Mode Design) asked me to style hair for her models for KMAC 2018 at the Kentucky Museum of Arts.

I had worked on a few projects with Tiffany and it was only a year ago I had done hair for her last show.

I agreed after she sent me her conceptual sketches of both her designs along with inspiration images of the hair she wanted for both models, both of whom I had the luxury of working with in the past. Katya Estes and Centria Kapris both have amazing runway walks.

The talented make up artist, Matt Goodlett would be doing both models make up. Tiffany had two distinct looks for each model inspired by David Bowie and Game of Thrones. For Katya, Tiffany wanted a slicked back pompadour and for Centria, Long white hair with loose curls.

I arrived several hours before opening to the public for call time. Downtown Main street was shut down for the runway show as people were readying for the evening show when I checked in. I was then directed to the third floor of the elevator where I was greet by Tiffany and the team.

The placed was filled with teams preparing their models (all 47). Matt was in the midst of Katya's make up: a huge Bowie lightening bolt in grey and silver metallics and glitter inspired by "Aladdin Sane"

We made sure to add pairing nails to both models. Tiffany piece for Katya titled "Visionary" cream body suit with gold armor shoulder pieces with matching shin guards.

Tiffany was really excited and was making final adjustments on her garments for the models. She even rocked a custom wig I had done for her.

For Katya's hair I used hair gel and lacquered down her sides while creating volume with her top length using a hair dryer. Afterwards I set the hair using a 2 inch march iron and set to cool. I then back combed the entire top section then smoothed the surfaces using a finishing brush and hair spray. Pinned into place. I added some glitter/gel and gold leaf to her sides and finished with gold bobbie pins of which were crossed on the back of her head.

We had a bout the two hours to ready our models before they were taken away for run through which took about two hours. Models returned for last touch up and hour and half before the show.

For Centria's hair I used a custom white frontal wig of which I set on rollers and used steam heat to set the hair. I did a center part with loose "lived in curls" as requested by Tiffany. Once fitted on Centria, Matt colored the hair line with blue make up. Using a small paint brush and gold glitter gel I covered her partline and blurred the gel outwards afterwards we used gold leaf and pressed that into the gel. Lastly, finishing the look with a crown.

For Centria's make up matt created a "Ziggy Stardust" look using metallics, gold and blue tones. Pairing blue lips with a silver\gold moon temple.

The show was a huge success and the models delivered on runway. I look forward to the next show with Tiffany.

KMAC COUTURE Runway show for Tiffany Nelson

CORRECTIVE BALAYAGE

Every once in a while I gain a new client from "corrective color" experiences. The cases vary from do it yourselfers (box color) to previous hairstyists. Error can happen from improper application, damage from too high developers or overprocessing or so fourth. I never talk bad about another hairstylist's work as it would just be in poor taste but I do like to ask questions about previous hair color/chemical history to make the best judgement on color.

So is the case with my lovely client Courtney, she had a previous hair color lightening job done that she was less than thrilled about. Most importantly, is the consultation and I need to really understand her wants and needs when it comes to visualizing her ideal hairstyle.

In this blog I will show before and after images along with images of application and formulation. She ultimately wants to be lighter along with a fringe and shapely layers. Courtney's hair is very thick with a slight wave pattern. A level 6 with natural red understones.

Courtney opts for low maintenance and comes into the salon every three to four months so balayage applications are ideal for her hair. She has no grey so I do both a foil and open air hair color technique (there are many numerous ways to go about correction but I found this technique to be easily executed). I'll be diffusing the points of lightener a few inches from her regrowth since she wants that "lived in look".

I did an all over finely foiled highlight about 3/4 inch about. I used Redken's Flash Lift lightener with 20 vol along with pH Bonder. Afterwards I balayaged all the exposed hair with Redken Free hand clay lightener and 40 vol with pH Bonder and allowed to process at room temperature for 45 minutes.

After processing hair was shampooed and treated. Shades EQ gloss was applied all over to her blown dried hair for 20 minutes. Formula 1 oz Crystal clear 1/2 09B, 1/2 09P and 2 0z processing solution.

I did a graduated layer hair cut to remove bulk with vertical cutting and created a soft horizontal fringe with point cutting.

Hair was styled with Pillow Proof Primer Spray and Guts 10 and a round brush. Take home recommendations pH Bonder treatment and Extreme shampoo and Conditioner. Iron Shape 11 is a must for any iron work on the hair.

My Vintage Valentine

Romance, Beauty, love and all things pretty. I have wanted to do a Valentine Themed photoshoot for some time. My creative partner, Genna Yussman Greene suggested we do one at the beginning of 2017. Genna had put together some vintage dressers and I wanted to do some classy updos and polished hair. We enlisted our buddy, Isidro Valencia for make up and two gorgeous models and our team was set.

We wanted to fuse romance, with big hair and vintage styling for a timeless feel. Genna ordered a custom floral backdrop to be used for the shoot. We chose two gorgeous models, Emily and Kristina. We have worked with both before and chose both girls for their beautiful facial structures, Their tall lean looks and their positive attitudes on set.

This collection was release exclusively by Bangstyle as a featured collection. The staff at Bangstyle have been so supportive of the work we do and they said the timing for the release was perfect.

For Make up Isidro created a soft look consisting of soft smoky eyes, pink pastels color on eyes, shimmer, rosy cheeks and soft contoured cheeks.

For This undo I converged all of Kristina's hair upwards into a ponytail I then added a long hair pad and a large wefted hair extension and form the hair over the pad into the shape using Fashion Works 12 and a finishing brush from Tearsheet. Control Addict 28 was used to finalize the look.

For this Fishtail undo, I fishtailed braided random sections on Emily's entire head then with the ends pinned them between the sections created for the fishtails.

This updo was a lot of fun. I was watching a lot of the old "Dynasty" so I did this timeless, voluminous undo with Redken's Guts 10 for volume. Next hair was pulled upwards into a couple of ponytails. A small hair pad was used for the bump on top that hair was covered with Emily's hair using Fashion Works 12. I smoothed the hair using a small finishing brush. The other ponytails that hair was backcombed, smoothed and rolled into shape with bobbie pins. Finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03.

The vintage look was set using Iron Shape 11 and Sam Villa's marcel iron and pinned to cool. Afterwards the hair was brushed out using Tearsheet's static free large tail comb and Fashion Works 12. No bend clips were placed in the hair to set it while Isidro finished Emily's her make up application.

Kristina's hair was set in the same fashion with Emily's only different placement and finished with Control Addict 28.

Hair Loft Salon | Social & Styling

I received a class request incorporating long hairdressing technique and best social media practices for Redken Elite: Hair Loft Salon in Salina, Kansas. I spoke to educational director, Lana Carmona several weeks prior to the class to see what the hairstylists expectations and areas of educational development.

I spent a few days coloring mannequins, practicing and creating several looks to showcase. It's all in the set: I needed to practice the looks before I could really feel confident in facilitation the looks to the hairstylists at Hair Loft.

I love finishing and I understand practicality of hairstyling for set versus salon. The looks have to be relevant, easily attainable, executed in a timely fashion and ultimately salon appropriate. With the upcoming Spring/Summer season approaching, wedding and prom hair will be in high demand from skilled hairstylists.

The looks were created with Basic hairstyling products by Redken.

I arrived a day prior and restyled my mannequins for the following day. I was greeted by the entire staff that had eagerly been anticipating my arrival. I was a bit nervous but this crowd was a fun bunch.

We started with foundation work: perfecting a blowout, reworking a shape and building volume.

Creating beautifully styled waves was requested by the several of the stylists so we did two styles of curls and brushed them out. After perfecting the curls each hairstylist had the opportunity to photograph the images with a ring light. After each segment we discussed discoveries and what worked.

We did several looks that contained fishtails, on scalp fishtails, on scalp french braids, infinity braids and chinese ladder braid. The biggest joys for me our helping the hairstylists tap into their creative side. A few of the hairstylists were hesistant about their braid skills but they were great sports and together with coaching the mastered all the braids. I was blown away by the talent of these hairstylists.

The last look involved the usage of hair pads along with kanakalon braiding hair. The usage of these fueled their creativity even more and gave them more tools for completing their prom and bridal hairstyles.

Social media education was incorporated by helping the hairstylist generated their own content for their social media platforms/channels. Creating beautiful imagery on their phones with good lighting for posting. Lastly, creating a social media schedule to follow for posting content.

The staff made me feel so welcome and I look forward to returning again for our next class. The even made lunch!! The salon was beautiful and the energy was good and these hairstylists truly care about their craft.

Radiance

I love working with photographer, Jenni Harper (Harper Young Photography). She has an eye for good lighting and balanced composition. Every few months we make plans to execute a photoshoot. This time we wanted to create beauty images incorporating moody lighting and textured, braided hairstyles. We decided to only use jewelry for wardrobe paired with shimmering make up. We are representing beauty and fashion with wearable looks for 2018.

We chose to use costume jewelry for simplicity from JC Beauty in Louisville, KY. We selected three models, two looks a piece. Models were booked from Lexington, Ky and Cincinnati, Oh.

We planned the shoot several weeks in advanced but challenges can happen. Our make up artist could not make the date last minute fortunately, I had an assistant on set. Caleb Yeske is both a hair and make up artist. He did and amazing job as he is well trained in his skill sets. Photoshoots have taught me a lot about how to just "go with the flow" as the show must go on. The end results speak for themselves as everyone did an amazing job.

We created 2-3 looks per model and time ranged up two hours per look. Looks involved extensive braiding and the usage of hair pieces. Pre braided kanekalon hair and hair pieces were prepared a few days prior to the shoot. Make up looks included shimmers, bronzers and metallic hues. Highlighters, Metallic lip color and bronzed skinned were incorporated to match and reflect the moody set/lighting created by Jenni. Models nails were polished in metallic tones.

For this look on Ayanna, I started with a directional blow-dry using Redken, Guts 10 upwards with a Sam Villa hairdryer and Denman Brush. Afterwards I converged the hair into pontails in the center like a "mohawk" while leaving smalls sections out that I cornrowed on scalp. I secured hair pieces on the small ponytails and attached the braids into them with hair pins and Fashion Works 12 hair spray.

I used Water Wax 03 pomade and a fine tooth come to wave the fine hairs around her hairline on Ayanna's skin.

This look on Kirjah, was created by sectioning small square sections into elastic bands and converging them together (cross hatching). I found Hardware Gel 16 helped with control of the hair. The top of her hair was braided with Kanekalon hair for length and density.

For this look on Katy, I section the center top and secured the hair into several ponytails that I pulled and loosen. The remaining hair was braided scalp and formed into a rosette and secured with hair pins. Control Addict 28 was used to set the look.

The collection was published in the January 2018 beauty issue of Beau Nu Magazine. We were excited and honored to have it featured.

The above look on Katy, involved irregular sectioning for on scalp braids pinned into a textured updo.

About a year ago I contacted photographer, Gary Barragan to photograph my texture collection. I wanted to focus on romantic, classic hairstyling with a vintage feel and modern flair. I love hairdressing and wanted this collection to really showcase my hairdressing skills.

I would of course enlist my favorite make up artist, Isidro Valencia and Wardrobe designer/stylist, Genna Yussman Greene.

I of course spent a couple weeks practicing the hairstyles on mannequins. Braiding, Setting hair, creating volume, backcombing, securing ponytails and curls. I ended up booking a total of 5 models so I had my work cut out for me. Time was very imperative and as such a long day for make up and for finishing hair. Luckily I wanted minimal for wardrobe and Genna did a great job putting together the necklaces.

We spent an entire day doing the collection. It took about 12 hours and the my table was filled with every brush, curling iron, hairspray. Hair extensions, clips, elastics and pins of all sorts to tackle every head of hair that entered the room.

At this point in my career, I understand that sometimes I may have a certain expectation for executing a hairstyle I practiced but sometimes they just don't work on the model chosen. This is really when one has to think smart, stay positive and move on. You really have to think about how the hair will compliment the model and balance her features. Thats the nature of the photoshoot...you make it work. The discoveries are quite impressive.

Isidro did an excellent job with make u. Very moody, strong defined brows, eyes and a deep lip color.

For creating this look on Kristina, her hair was micro crimped all over using Sam Villa's texture iron and Redken's Iron Shape 11. Hair was then separated on top and the back hair was backcombed and secured into a roll with hair pins. The top section was backcombed and formed into the top row connecting the first roll. Worked into shape with Fashion Works 12 and finished with Control Addict 28.

to create Shantay's hair. The from was separated from ear to ear. The back hair was wrapped around (rick-rack techique) hair pins and ironed. The from was blown straight with a Denman brush, hairdryer and Redken's Argan Oil 6 and Align 12. Next the front was marcelled iron into a set. Once cooled, the hair as formed into shape and the back was released and teased out. Finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03 for high shine.

on model Alexis, I did a scalp braid on one side and set the opposite side with a 3/4" marcel iron and Iron Shape 11. Once the hair was cooled I brushed/combed out the hair and set it with Control Addict 28.

For Katy, I separated the top into a top ponytail then braided the hair with Movability 05. Aftwards I knotted the braid and secured with hair pins. The lower half of her hair was converged into a side ponytails and loosely braided with Move Ability 05. The look was completed with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03.

ISSE 2018: Backstage Redken

My first ISSE (International Salon & Spa Expo) was a success as I worked as lead support for Redken Artists, Tara Gardinar and Lindsey Olson alongside Edith Navarro and Jaclyn Harwood. Our Program, "Beyond Brunette" focused on color trends for Brunette Clientele with formulas and inspiration using Redken hair color and styling haircare.

I flew from Louisville, KY to Long Beach California and stayed at the Renaissance Hotel across from the Long Beach Convention Center that housed the event.

I had just seen a lot of this crew not even a week later working the NRAC 2018 convention. ISSE is hosted by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) and is the largest beauty event on the west coast. Hairstylists, muas, nail techs, manufacturers and beauty insiders from around the globe come for the three day educational event.

What is so thrilling about working backstage is seeing other artist I idolize who work for other brands. The energy can be felt pretty much everywhere.

There was plenty of walking from the hotel to the convention center and finally to the Redken model room. Team Redken arrived with tools to set up a day of prep on both models and a ton of mannequins that were on display throughout all the programs. We all spent hours working on mannequins from cutting, styling and multiple color applications to a single mannequin.

Tight quarters for sure but fortunately we all have worked together before and as an artists you easily adapt to all your environments. It's fun, exciting and busy.

Each program had a total of five performances divided into two show days. Redken presentation booth was centered in the show room and had a small stage surrounded by seating areas for the attendees/hairstylists. Through out the show the hairstylists could make purchases at the booth of the latest and greatest Redken hair color and haircare.

The entire experience was amazing along with the warm California climate. I look forward to the next opportunity to work manny more ISSE shows. Next stop: ABS....see you in Chicago

Photographer, Louis Tinsley asked me to do hair for an evening photoshoot. I agreed as I like the model, designer (Frances Lewis) and make up artist (Matt Goodlett) involved in the project. This was also my first time collaborating with Louis so I was really excited.

Louis requested a blue wig and I have this dark blue blob wig i styled on Model, Lucy. I braided her hair before covering with a wig cap then attached the wig on her head. I used love heat on a hair dryer and Fashion Works 12 working spray to shape the wig. Once in place I used Control Addict 28 to lock the hairstyle.

Designer, Frances Lewis designed the gorgeous sheer dress that was worn by Lucy.

Make up artist, Matt Goodlett created a dark smoky eye with a hint of bronze. The look was complete with a dramatic brow and matte nude lip.

This was a quick shoot that lasted under four hours. I look forward to more shoots with these creative artists.

NRAC 2018 Grand Opening

I've been a redken since 2010 and have attended many (Redken Artist Connections) (NRAC) Every two years, Redken artists from all over the world are invited to attend this educational conference that is geared to educate and inspire.

his time was pretty awesome as I was selected to be part of the Grand Opening teams that kicked started the three day educational event.

Working backstage is always exciting, crazy and fast paced. I love the synergy of working with artists that are 100% invested in their craft as I am.

To my surprise every artist was going to be on stage doing hair and this was my first for Redken.

The days were spent coloring, styling, braiding hair and practicing looks that averaged a 14+ day. With so much excitement it's rather hard to sleep and Adrenaline and excitement are what keeps one going.

The model room is covered in plastic wrap to protect the vote carpets and chair at the beauty JW Marriot Hotel that became my home for a week. Rows of Redken haircolor and styling products and hair care were stacked on tables along with hair tools, wigs, tripods and kanekalon braiding hair.

Each day started with a meeting that highlighted what needed to get done. The smell of hairspray filled the room and hair was being colored, cut and braided on models.

The theme this year was "Hair is Art". Three contemporary artists (Pollack, Lichenstein and Calder) worked would be translated into wearable hairstyle on all models and dancers that were in the show.

Between getting prepped both models and dancers were is wardrobe fitting, runway rehearsals and hair run throughs. In addition all Redken artist were expected to partake in dress rehearsal to work out all kinks. Everyone involved worked early mornings and late hours into the night to be ready for grand opening night.

Diamonds in the Rough

About a year ago, my good friend and designer Genna Yussman as me to create a new wig collection to highlight her 10 piece couture collection. I gladly said yes as I had seen her designs. Our intentions would be to have the collection walk the runway and then have it shot for editorial. She was asked by Louisville Bespoke creator, Yamilca Rodriquez to be the highlight and finale of of her show.

For the Runway Genna wanted me to alter grey wigs so she purchased 10 longs wigs and I spent a few weeks cutting various geometric fringes and braids on them so they would all be cohesive yet different. The collection was a huge hit.

The editorial however would be completely different as she would modify the wardrobe and we selected 10 models that could execute the high fashion looks. I spent several weeks and a small fortune ordering the materials I need. I would then alter, cut, style and make new wigs from wefts and wig caps that would be all new and original for the photoshoot. The ten piece wig collection took me over ten weeks to finish with my other endeavors and were all colored using Redken's City Beats fashion colors.

Another exciting part of the shoot, we had a hairstylist that had won a day mentorship through Redken and American Salon Magazine and they flew Mazey Combs from Wichita Kansas to assist on set.

We were honored to have Make up artist Isidro Valencia who created 10 various make up looks to compliment hair and wardrobe. We had photographer, Derek Hibben photograph this collection for a total of 14 hours at Diamonds Pub in louisville Kentucky.

After the shoot we submitted five of the beauty images to the Canadian Hairdresser's competition "The Contessa" and were fortunate to have them place as a semi-finalist in the "International Hairstylist" category. The Fashion/editorial images a part of The Popular Magazine.

So excited when a new color line is launched by Redken. Especially these new Shades EQ gloss Pastels.

My client, Karen wanted to experiment with pink hair of sorts and I had mentioned the introduction of new pastel hues by Redken in Shades EQ Glosses. — My client, **Karen** wanted to experiment with pink hair of sorts and I had mentioned the introduction of new pastel hues by **Redken in Shades EQ Glosse**s.

She was game for anything and since she was already a blonde I thought this would be a great opportunity. I decided to lighten her up just a bit so I did a foiled highlight with some heavy balayage lightening on the ends using Redken Flashlights combined with pH Bonder along with Colortrak Long foils.

After processing, treating the hair with #2 in pH Bonder and shampooing I did a flash tone at the shampoo bowl using 09T in Shades EQ Glosses.

I dried the hair then proceeded to mix up Shades EQ pastels Pink and Peach.

I applied the peach zone in her root area and alternated between pink and peach through the ends of her entire head on Colortrak Meche Strips. Processed at room temperature for 25 minutes. Shampooed and conditioned proceeded by styling.

I round brushed Karen's hair with Pillow Proof Primer spray followed by Guts 10. Afterward I spiral curled the hair with the Sam Villa curling wand and Iron Shape 11. The color lasted about 4 weeks and head a beautiful, sheer rose gold finish.

Gunnar Deatherage is a man of many talents; Designer, Stylists, Creative Director. I was excited when he contacted me regarding hair for his upcoming fashion spread for The Voice Tribune. I was very excited as he said curly hair and the shoot would focus on a generation of wealthy, fashionable women in a huge home.

I was excited again to have the opportunity to work with make up artist, Bethany Hood and Photographer, Clay Cook would be photographing the collection. Models would be book from Heyman Talent Agency.

I think one of the best parts of this photoshoot was is the home which served as the backdrop to this collection. The Conrad Caldwell Historical Mansion with its haunting energy was rich in beauty and history with a haunting vibe to the past. I was mesmerized by the house and intrigued by it size, high ceilings and original decor.

Bethany and I did hair and make up to prep the models at Gunnar's studio. For hair I prepped the models with Redken's Guts 10 for subtle volume and then I sprayed Iron Shape 11 on sections of the hair and used various curling irons. I used the new Sam Villa Curling iron on all models and on the youngest model I used the Kiss 5/8 curling wand to set the hair.

Clay Cook and his team did scouted various parts of the house to be used as backdrops to tell a story for the collection. Special lighting and test shoots were done prior to photographing the models. Special care was used when working with the actual antiques in the home which we were not allowed to move.

I have some pretty amazing friends in the beauty industry. My friend and make up artist, Bethany Hood asked if I was interested in a fashion and beauty photoshoot with photographer, Chelsea Marrin. I course I say yes I had not had the chance to work with Chelsea and I was excited when they sent me the vision board.

They wanted lots of texture and volume, warm hair tones that contrasted with dark hair color and heavy fringes.

Wardrobe would be original designs made by Gunnar Deatherage. I quickly pulled from my arsenal of hair pieces and wigs to create several looks. I precut a couple bobs with strong fringes and set a couple with either a texture iron or curling iron. I colored a couple hair pieces as well.

The photoshoot was set early on a gorgeous sunny day at Clay Cook's studio. Lots of snack were present and random tunes played in the background as Bethany and I readied both models. Initial fittings were done on the models before hand and hair and make up were combined to compliment each look. Sadie Ann Miller and Mei Li Zheng were the lovely models booked.

For this look on model Sadie, I used a custom wig colored with a soft peach highlights mixed with dark tones of which I secured to her head. I then used really small hair pads I place on her top sides and lightly backcombed the hair before covering the pads entirely and secure with hair pins. I strategically placed random section of hair across her forehead and highly teased the ends before spray Redken's Quick Dry 18.

Make up consisted of a green lip and soft cat eye with enhanced gold eyeshadow. Brows were heavily defined with soft contour on the cheeks.

This look required a custom wig that I Cut a strong fringe before styling each section with the Sam Villa texture iron. Afterwards hair was teased at the root and shaped into volume with Fashion Works 12 and lots of Control Addict 28.

Bethany turned up the depth with a darker lip color to compliment Gunnar's wardrobe.

The following looks on both models contained custom wigs colored with various Redken copper and reds hues. Heat styled with a curling iron and Iron Shape 11.

I'm always excited to work with new creative teams and opportunities always present themselves. I was asked by one of the models, Rebecca Bien whom I had previously book for a hair color collection. She ask if I was interested and if I would be available to do her hair for a photoshoot

. She had booked Make up artist, Matt Goodlett whom I've worked with on several occasions and photographer, Ronnie Louis. She said the concept was to include "Big" hair and "Glitter" and somewhat disco theme... of course I said yes!!

I had never worked with Ronnie before so I was excited and I arrived at Joe Goodwin's photography studio were our collection would be photographed. I had brought some jewels, glitter, hair pads and hair extensions and a wig in my kit. Matt and I were inspired by the concept and worked together to create two looks.

for the first looks we wanted a long flowing look. I used a front lace wig that I lightly heat styled with a slight bend in the ends. I wanted to focus on the part so I took Redken Hardward Gel 16 and loose green glitter and mixed thoroughly. Using a color brush I applied the glitter in the center of the part and while hold the brush flat spread the color outwards. While Matt did Rebecca's make up The glitter gel had adequate time to dry and I finished the look with Control Addict 28.

Make up looked created by Matt included matching green lip color, defined brows and eyes and soft highlighter. Lastly a diffused dollar sign on the apple of her cheek. Nails were finished with a high gloss coat of black polish.

We turned up the tunes and Rebecca posed for the camera.

For the second look. I brushed Rebecca's hair upwards into a high pony and secured with elastics. I used Redken's Fashion Works 12 working spray and my Tearsheet finishing brush to create a smooth finish. I then used an oversize hair pad by Kris Sorbie I bobbi pins to her scalp. The I tookcustom hair extensions colored with City Beats Coral and Pink and brown and blonde that I crimped with the Sam Villa Texture iron converged them together and strateigically wrapped them over the hair pad.

For make up, Matt artfully placed body jewels and shimmer and highlighter over Rebecca's body. He turned it up a notch with a smoky eye and deep pink lip hue. Lastly a diffused dollar sign on the apple of her cheek.

This collection was exclusively released by Bangstyle. We gave big hair, glitter and shimmer.

I love men's hairstyling and fashion. For this collection I was inspired by men's hairstyling from the past: 1950's and 1990's and the energy of big city life. With every photoshoot comes an amazing story but they are not without their own set of challenges that is always a learning curve.

For this collection I booked photographer, Steve Squall. I hired Steve last year to photograph another collection and worked on several published editorial spreads in the past. Steve does a fantastic job doing fashion photography and was a perfect fit for shooting a men's collection. I had on board make up artist, Isidro Valencia and Genna Yussman Greene on styling. I met Steve to discuss my ideas for the shoot and he loved the concept.

This is one of several collections I did for NAHA although it was not nominated, I was honored to have it was released exclusively by Bangstyle.

As I had mentioned earlier, photoshoots have challenges. I had all models booked and all was a go however I had an issue with a model that overbooked himself with his agency so I could not use him and on the day of model prep one of my models no showed. Fortunately I had lucked out and I was able to rebook both. I swear I have a photoshoot "Guardian Angel". Through it all you persevere and make it work with the team.

I practiced some of the looks on mannequins. I did some highlighting and tapered cuts along with various styling techniques. This would all help for the prep day with the models. I would be more inspired on prep day where I did both color and cut on the models and could work with their bone structures and skin tones.

The prep day was set a day before the shoot and lasted for seven hours. Ellis arrived and I decided to do an all over lightening process. I used Redken Flashlight with pH bonder. After getting him to a pale yellow I glaze his hair with Shades EQ glosses 07P, 09P and 09T.

I did a shear over comb cut on his sides and back and left the top length longer for styling.

On the day of the photoshoot I styled his hair with Hardware Gel 16 to create the finger wave.

On model, Justin I did a soft highlight using Redken Blonde Icing combined with pH Bonder. After processing I glaze the hair with 09T in Shades EQ gloss.

For his cut I did shear over comb on his sides and back and left a visible weigh line to build the silhouette.

Styling on the day of the shoot consisted of flat wrapping his hair with Thickening Lotion 06 with the Sam Villa Paddle brush. Hand styled with Move Ability 05 and finished with Control Addict 28.

On Micah's hair I did a heavy highlight with Blonde Icing and pH Bonder followed with a Shades EQ gloss in 07P.

For his cut I decided to do a faded mohawk using my Andis Clippers "Envy" and layered the top with my Sam Villa 7" shears.

The styling for the shoot day included paddle brush combined with hair dryer and Hardware Gel 16. Once hair was dry it was hear styled with Iron Shape 11 and 2" curling iron. For handstyling I used Mess Around 10 finished with Control Addict 28.

We shot early morning at Steve's studio. Lots of coffees and bagels kept us busy and content for a six hour shoot. I staggered models arrival times to give everyone enough time to prepare. We did wardrobe tests with each model to find the right look.

For make up Isidro did a fantastic job keeping the make up real clean with soft contour cheeks, lip balm and lots of highlighter to enhance model's cheeks and brow bones.
